Yoga Anatomy & Yin Yoga Immersion

With Joe Barnett, E-RYT 500, Senior Student of Paul Grilley, Teaching

Assistant for Paul Grilley, Instructor with Yoga Club Teacher Training

Student Feedback & Recommendations: "Yoga Anatomy & Yin with Joe Barnett had so many AH-HA moments for me, I'm not sure I can adequately express how life changing this weekend was for me both as an individual and as a Yoga teacher. The class took the pressure off having the expectation that everyone's pose should look the same. For me personally, I found out why Frog Pose was always my least-loved pose. It's because my hips don't do that! My cueing for many poses has been enhanced because of my greater understanding of joints, anatomy and bone structure differences. Joe made this all clear and easily understood. This is one workshop every Yoga teacher should attend." ~ Dee Boulanger, RYT200, 500 HR Student    More Feedback

The Science of the Chakra and Meridian Systems

The mysteries of the energetic body go as deep as the spirit.  At its core, Yoga is a science, a science that goes beyond what most other forms of science ignore or dismiss out of confusion and fear. The study of the Chakras and Meridians is the study of the wheels and rivers of subtle energy that unite the physical, emotional and thinking bodies.

Come learn the basics of these ancient scientific practices. Joe will present the ancient theory of the Three Bodies (Physical, Astral, Causal) and lead you into sitting and asana practices which may assist you in going beyond the theories and into a first hand experience of these subtle threads which tie us together at our energetic foundations.

Come learn the steps toward sense withdrawal, concentration and absorption. There is nothing to fear. At the very least, concentration will be enhanced, and unhelpful attachments will be surrendered. At the very most, it will be the beginning of a journey toward consciousness of the soul.

The Art of Teaching Yin Yoga

We'll learn the teaching techniques that make a true Yin class unique, relaxing, and rejuvenating.  You will learn how to sequence a Yin class, explore appropriate communication, voice quality, and understand how to personalize a Yin practice for yourself and/or for your students.

  • Communication: When to listen/observe, when to speak/lead

  • Introduction to sequencing and leading a true Yin Yoga class

What is Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is a very simple practice. We settle into and asana 3-7 minutes and slowly relax our muscles to allow the deeper drier tissues- the connective tissues that wrap our muscles and make up our joint capsules, to be safe and therapeutically stretched, stimulated and strengthened.

The alignment rules of the postures are also simple, but more importantly they are functional and organic: We listen to our bodies and lead ourselves into the shape that follows the natural contours of our spine, pelvis and hips. However, bringing ourselves into this simplicity can be quite challenging. The practice of being still and quiet for minutes at a time can be trying enough, let alone while dropping into a powerful stretch that moves across wide sheets of fascia and drops deep into the ligaments of the joints. And listening to our bodies to find the natural alignment of the pose requires a power of discrimination, and an understanding and familiarity with the ever-changing sensations in the body.

In this training we will analyze, observe and practice all of these elements of Yin Yoga in depth. We will examine ourselves on a personal level with ancient meditation techniques that guide us into a steady awareness of the changing sensations in the postures. We will study with slides of real bones and by articulating the joints on a plastic skeleton. The training will be hands on and interactive. We will examine each other with ROM tests (range of motion).

The study culminates in a truer understanding of why every posture should be modified to the individual, the infinite variety of human bodies (from the bones up), and the basic techniques which help guide each Yin student with their unique skeletal structures into the appropriate asana for them.

About Joe Barnett, E-RYT 500,  Senior Student of Paul Grilley

Joe Barnett, E-RYT 500, has been teaching for over a decade. He travels nationally and internationally year round, teaching many styles of movement and has certifications in Yang (Vinyasa) Yoga, Yin Yoga and Acro Yoga.

His main focus of study is Functional Anatomy for Yoga and all forms of movement. Joe is a senior student of Paul Grilley, a true Yoga Scientist who is largely responsible for the current rise in the popularity of Yin Yoga and Functional Alignment. Joe is also the teaching assistant for Paul Grilley's teacher trainings. Using Paul's Taoist analysis of yoga and the body, Joe travels teaching teachers how to understand and feel the full range of motion of their joints and their students joints; and how to use this wisdom to effectively and therapeutically build the postures in yoga.

Please bring a yoga mat, water and any other items you need for yoga practice.

Student Feedback & Recommendations:

"Yoga Anatomy & Yin with Joe Barnett was one of the most enlightening immersions for me.  I learned so much about both my personal practice and how to work with clients with a greater understanding of their unique body structures, and the need to  adjust their postures and practice to fit their bodies. As just one example, during the weekend I won the t-rex competition for shortest arms relative to torso. My unique structure affects not only my ability to "jump through"  but also my ability to do seated twists the way often cued.  My spine is best lengthened by placing one hand behind my back and using the other arm to grasp my knee, as opposed to attempting to place the elbow on the outside of the knee which actually causes me to hunch over slightly in order to reach. This greater knowledge gives me a sense of empowerment in my personal practice to adjust postures as I need. No matter how many anatomy courses you've taken, I highly recommend this unique and fun approach to the study.  Enjoy placing with skeletons, hearing about cadavers, and much more!" Melanie Snyder, RYT 500

"I highly recommend the Yoga Anatomy & Yin Yoga immersion! Joe is extremely knowledgeable and fantastic teacher, he really knows anatomy. What really hit home from this training is that everyone has different bone structure that will allow them to get in certain poses with ease or they may have challenges. It was great to hear that it is ok to modify our poses that fit us so we have ease and not to force. I learned that I internally rotate my hips that prevents from going deeper in certain poses and learned modifications that work for me. I also learned I can advocate for myself in a class to use modifications and not force my body into positions that may not work for me. I can still push to my edge, but be cautious and not go too far.  As a teacher, this workshop allowed me view the people I work with as unique individuals and to teach them modifications if needed.  Plus I will always have props available. This is a workshop I plan on taking again for sure for a refresher!" ~ Lisa Firullo, RYT200, 500 HR Yoga Therapy Student
